‘cats season ended wednesday night, but

Juice is the f*#@!$g man. He has been a consummate Wildcat since the first day he stepped on campus 4 years ago, and should stand proud. He’s had one of the most impressive careers of any ‘Cat baller ever.

learning english at japanese class

At Japanese class tonight discussed the recent tragedy and English prepositions. Sensei asked me for a good way to decide on them and I was stumped. Typing english prepositions into Google yielded ego4u’s page first. After perusing the other options, theirs is sufficient.

At home earlier today I was excited to discover the ‘Cats made the NIT, and its a home game to boot.

Updated danoff dot org tonight as I’ve done for a few Monday’s in a row. Also spent some time trying to find students.

Jeffrey went back to school on Sunday which leaves me minus a brother in arms and with a lot more time. Life is less exciting around home, and now I am left with the opportunity to invest my time in my projects. This is something I have tried to do before with moderate success last February and November. Learning from those experiences I hope to improve by being more organized and by saying “no” more often to other opportunities that arise.

One such opportunity suggested by my father was a networking event for Northwestern alumni, specifically entrepreneurs. While I did take one class at Northwestern I’m certainly no alum. Yet, with my efforts at The Uncertainty Principle I qualify as an entrepreneur and given the event was open to the public I decided to attend.

I was nervous at first, when I arrived everyone was just sorta standing around. Thankfully the structure came soon, starting with a speech by Steven Rogers. Following his helpful talk they had speed networking. Everyone was given a letter (A, B, C, D) and lined up, with A’s facing B’s and so on. We had 5 minutes to chat with the person across from us, then they literally rang a cow bell and we moved on to the next person. I gave my schpiel,

“I am the Editor of The Uncertainty Principle. Its a bi-monthly collection of creations on one topic. Past topics have included Women, Space, Vision and Popcorn, the upcoming one is Solipsism. Artists are free to interpret the topic however they please, then I put them together into a print and online edition. The idea is to have many alternative viewpoints on the same idea. [Emphasized by my right index finger up and left index finger pointed down going around it in a circle.]“

That caught people’s attention, the fact that my distribution is essentially 3 to 4 people was not so impressive. I emphasized the first year was about survival, and now that we have survived, the goal is to get more copies sold. A goal I feel I can accomplish with enough time invested.

The event was tied-in with a basketball game, where the ‘Cats played the Michigan Wolverines. NU was in control from the opening tip, and led by double digits most of the game. Its fun watching Juice lead the team, he has a certain je ne sais quoi that exudes confidence even though at times the team appears helter skelter.

a monday or work & play

With the holidays complete I am now transitioning into my current life living in Winnetka. I want to be teaching English as Foreign Language abroad again starting this Fall. To get there I am researching schools, sprucing up my resume and refining my teaching website.

line-art-of-boy-sitting-on-drift-wood-fishing_w725_h496Yesterday that meant sending letters of interest to schools in Dubai I found in “SCHOOLS ABROAD OF INTEREST TO AMERICANS” (ISBN: 9780875581668), re-wording/re-formatting my resume and doing a draft of my online teaching resume to be published on Mr. Danoff’s Teaching Laboratory.

Of course the goal of being abroad again teaching is far off. In the short-term on the Teaching English note I want to see if I can find some students to teach in the Chicagoland area, and publish the materials and writings I’ve done on the subject over the past two years.

On that note, last week I published Kitty‘s (one of the Chinese Junior Highschoolers who I’ve been tutoring English writing to) latest piece: “Are you busy? Why?” It’s a fun piece giving insight into the hectic world Chinese teenagers need to navigate for success. Please e-mail me charles@danoff.org with any comments you have for Kitty.

For fun yesterday I attended the Northwestern vs. Michigan State game with my Dad. It was the first time I’d been to Welsh-Ryan in a couple of years, and a lot had changed. Typically a Big Ten game attracts big crowds, but mostly for the visiting team. Last night that was still true, but the first level was packed with Purple, including students packed in behind both baskets. The atmosphere was electric and given NU is good now the game was fantastic. MSU led basically the entire time, then with about 3 minutes left the ‘Cats went into a full-court press (I wondered why they hadn’t done so earlier) and a few 3-pointers and defensive stops later, the ‘Cats were within 1. They still lost the game, but it was seriously in doubt and NU solidifed their status as an NCAA bubble team (in my eyes). I particularly liked the aggressive game on both ends of Drew Crawford and reserve center Davide Curletti.Julie_Delpy_02

Afterwards Dad and I watched Jim Harbaugh and Andrew Luck lead a dominating victory in the Orange Bowl capstoned by Harbaugh deftly deflecting questions (detailed here, though the writer has a different take) from ESPN reporters about his future by walking away or focusing his answer on what had just occurred. He seems like a bit of a cocky a$$, but I was impressed with his class in the context.

Concluded the evening by watching “2 Days in Paris” a 2007 film by Julie Depuy (pictured @ right). I really enjoyed the movie for its honesty and decisions to show the difficulties of relationships. I also was reminded of why I’ve always loved my visits to Paris and want to arrange a longer stay soon. I wrote a short review of the film on Amazon.com, which you can read here: Treat 4 Traveling Americans (if you have an Amazon account, please comment or rate the review).

Finally I published a new edition of danoff dot org (my homepage). Following suggestions from multiple parties I decided to put a picture of me on there for the first time. I didn’t before, ’cause I wanted the focus to be on the text, but I do enjoy pictures of others on their homepages and it doesn’t mean folks can’t still focus on the text.

If you have any feedback about how I can market myself as an English Teacher, thoughts about NU basketball, or criticisms of my latest homepage edition please leave it in the comments below.
